Walking Football team enter first tournament

The young chaps who make up our walking football squad played their first competitive games last weekend, as they participated in the Brackley Town F.C Walking Football Tournament.

This is how the day went according to one of the participants:-

“Early Sunday morning we were on our way to Brackley Town FC for our first ever competitive game as the AFC R&D Walking Football Team.

“We didn’t quite know what to expect, on arrival the teams were split into 4 groups of 3 and played each other in a round-robin.

“We won the first game 4-0 all the goals being score by Alan. We tactically played well.

“However, the second game brought us down to earth as we played Kettering, the team that eventually won the competition. Their players were excellent, a good passing team resulting in some spectacular goals.

“Our first win was enough to get us into the quarter-final against Cherwell, a close game which we lost narrowly against a more experienced team.

“We had a great day out and enjoyed our first tournament.

“I would recommend walking football to anybody over 50 as a great way to exercise. We meet on a Thursday evening at Raunds Manor School at 6.45. Everybody is welcome, as we always need more players”

Tournament organiser, Mark Craddock wrote to us after the event, on behalf of Brackley Saints Walking FC, thanking us for making it such a success;

“Thank you guys, we’ve had a wonderful tournament with a great bunch of appreciative and really sporting people.

“Our first Walking Football festival has been a resounding success and we will be looking to repeat it again next year. We would also like to thank the following for stepping up and refereeing matches: Taff Lovesey (Netherton), Steve Baumber (Towcester) and Dick Chaplin (AFC Rushden & Diamonds).

“Enjoy your footie guys and avoid those injuries.”

Well done boys, let’s make sure this is the first of many outings for Diamonds’ newest team.

If you’re over 50 and want to join up, head over to Raunds Manor School on any Thursday evening at 6:45 and hook up with Tom and the boys.
